TED: Sixth sense technology
This post is for all the geeks. All of you must be well aware of Microsoft Surface. Those who are not, take a look:
Microsoft Surface is a revolutionary multi-touch computer that responds to natural hand gestures and real-world objects, helping people interact with digital content in a simple and intuitive way. With a large, horizontal user interface, Surface offers a unique gathering place where multiple users can collaboratively and simultaneously interact with data and each other. That's all about surface - A big expensive chunk of metal that acts as a surface for you to do stuff after spending million bucks.
But what if you can create the surface effect on any surface (say your hand) available and that too in just $350??
Yes that's true and it is called Sixth sense, though a misnomer.
Basically, Sixth Sense is a mini-projector coupled with a camera and a cellphone—which acts as the computer and your connection to the Cloud, all the information stored on the web. Sixth Sense can also obey hand gestures, like in the movie Minority Report.
Some Snippets
1. You can click the pictures of whatever you see by your iconic hand gestures and possibly view them on any wall by projecting them, organise them, resize them etc. by natural hand gestures.
2. The device is completely portable, you can even use your hand as a surface and the whole device dont cost you more than your current cell phone rate.
3. It gives relevant information of whatever is in front of you. It helps you buy things based on your personal preferences.
4. In a bookstore, it can help to project the reviews and amazon ratings on the book itself.
5. You can get the latest video anotations that are projected on the newspaper you are reading. You can even get the latest score updates.
6. You can even view the word cloud of the person you are interacting with and that too on his clothes - a bit controversial though.
7. Knowing time is as simple as drawing a circle on your wrist.
8. What else? Go watch out yourself. And yeah its all done by an Indian, So cheers!

HOW TO TRANSFER FILES FROM PC TO PC USING LAN
I'm assuming you've Windows XP running on both the computers and drivers for LAN cards are installed.
Additional Requirements: A CAT-5 Ethernet Crossover Cable(thats technical name, common name is LAN wire cross waala)
I will discuss two ways to do the same. One is a primitive simple way to share files. Other one is a bit geeky, and you'll probably feel proud of yourself doing that :)
Ok, so simpler one first.
1. Insert both the ends of the cable's RJ45 connectors to both the PC's LAN ports.
2. Open "Network Connections" from Control Panel or from Start>Connect To>Show All Connections. There, in both the machines, make sure the ethernet cards under "LAN or High-Speed Internet" category are enabled. If not enabled then right click over the corresponding icon and click "Enabled"
3. Now in both the computers right click "My Computer" in start menu and click "Properties". In "Computer Name" tab, click the "Change" button. Now put different names for both computers and in the bottom below "Member of" label select the radio button labelled "Workgroup" and put any name there. But make sure this workgroup name should be same in both the computers. Now click ok. And restart both the computers.
4. After restarting, open "My Network Places". Oh, where is it??? lol if you can't find it, just open "My Computer" and in the left pane i.e. Tasks Pane you'll see "My Network Places" under "Other Places". Click that. In the tasks pane of "My Network Places" click "View workgroup computers" and you'll be able to see the other computer.
5. Ok, now they're networked. Ok? So how to transfer the files? Easy!!! In any computer right click any file/folder/drive which you want to share, click properties and in sharing tab enable sharing.m Thats it!!! You can see that file/folder/drive on the other computer when you double click this computer's name in its my network places. easily copy the files.
The other(geeky) method, I'll post tomorrow.
Here are some images.

Thats a caT-5 cable with Rj45 connectors on both ends.

This one has one additional requirement and thats Apache Server Software. You may download it by clicking here.
Install it in the computer from which you want to serve the file to other one. Installation is quite easy. If you've some confusion in what values are to be filled in which boxes, then use these values:
Network Domain: localhost
Server Name: localhost
Admin Email: any email address
And check the box labelled: for All Users, on Port 80, as a Service
Ok, now you've installed Apache, lets make sure whether it is working correctly or not.
Open any browser window and type localhost in the address bar and press enter. If you see a white page with "It works!" written in large black font, that means you've done it succesfully!!!
But if not, then refer to the official documentation here or an unofficial nice one here.
Ok, so now we've finished installing the server software. Now lets proceed ahead and configure our LAN.
1. Follow the first two steps of the previous blog post
2. Now in the server computer i.e. the one with Apache, right click your ethernet card in Network Connections, click Properties. In the box under "This connection uses following items", click Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) and click Properties command button below.
3. Now check the radio button that says "Use the following IP address" and enter 192.168.0.1 in the box, press "Tab" key on your keyboard, and the next Subnet Mask box will automatically be filled with 255.255.255.0. Now click ok and close.
4. In the client computer do the same but put the IP address as 192.168.0.2
5. Now navigate to the apache installation directory's htdocs folder and delete the index.htm or index.html files.
6. Copy the files you want to share, to this directory.
7. In the client computer open a web browser(I don't recommend IE!!!, use Opera or Firefox), and type 192.168.0.1 in the address bar and press enter. Viola!!! You can see the files that you copied to htdocs folder in the server computer. Just click any of it to start the download. You will get download speeds around 80Mbps i.e. around 10MB/s.
Here are some images to help you if you get stuck somewhere.

Access Everything that is Blocked at Work
Some tips and tricks to pass the ‘Access Denied’ barrier at school, college or work.
There are various techniques you can use to access your personal web-based email, Facebook, Orkut, Twitter or instant chat clients at work. Read our guide.
Google Talk
- To access Google Talk at work, one thing you could do is (shown below) add the following Google Talk gadget client URL - http://talkgadget.google.com/talkgadget/client - to your Firefox bookmarks and select the option to load it in the sidebar.
- Try an online instant messaging service like IMO, Ebuddy, KoolIM1, KoolIM2 or Meebo to access Google Talk when provided with net access. Chances are these websites may have not been blocked in your office.
- You can access Google Talk in iGoogle. On your left sidebar in the iGoogle page, the Chat section is your Google Talk. iGoogle is basically a Google startpage you can use as a portal.
- Try the KoolIM extension in Firefox. Type this URL - http://www.koolim.com/koolimsidebar.xpi – in your address bar. An option to install the add-on will pop up. Install it. Please note that this extension doesn’t work the latest version of Firefox.
- Yoono Firefox add-on is another tool you can install on the web browser to instantly access Google Talk.
- Google Desktop has a gadget for Google Talk. Try installing Google Desktop and access Google Talk within it.
GMail
- To access GMail when you dont have access, simply try the mobile version http://m.gmail.com.
- Use https –> https://gmail.com, https://mail.google.com
- iGoogle has a specific GMail gadget from which you can access GMail.
- Register on Netvibes reader to access GMail as a gadget. You can check new email from Netvibes.
- There is a paid service available to use GMail. It’s called GMail From Work. If you are willing to pay money to access GMail at work, you could try this out.
- Again, like Google Talk, there is also an add-on gadget for GMail in Google Desktop.
- Access it from a mobile web simulator, like Opera.
Yahoo Messenger
- Try online IM services like Meebo or IMO. Refer the similar point above in ways to access Google Talk.
- Yoono Firefox Add-on allows access to Yahoo Messenger.
- Try Yahoo’s online messenger service to use it if it’s unblocked.
- There are various stand-alone Facebook applications that are available, which you can probably download at work if allowed. These are independent, desktop apps that one can use to access it – like the Facebook AIR app. Download it now.
- You can access Facebook through Firefox add-on Yoono.
- To access Facebook chat, you can try web-based messengers like IMO.
- Try Facebook Mobile in your web browser to access Facebook at work.
- Facebook’s new Lite version might still be unblocked at work or school, considering that it’s newly released.
- Access it from a mobile simulator, like Opera.
Orkut
- Try Orkut India’s website to access the social network – http://orkut.co.in. Chances are this one’s not blocked by your admin folks.
- Like Facebook Mobile, you can access Orkut on your office PC at Orkut Mobile.
- There is another trick to get to Orkut. Try http://images.orkut.com. Now this one actually leads you to your Orkut homepage, provided you are logged in to your Google account.
- Access it from a mobile simulator, like Opera.

A review of ISRO Bhuvan Features and Performance

Here is a frank review of the features and performance of ISRO Bhuvan (the much anticipated satellite-based 3D mapping application from ISRO) BETA Release and comparing it to supposed arch rival Google Earth. Bhuvan from the begining is claiming that it is not competing with Google Earth in any way, but there was much hype and propaganda in the media saying that ISRO Bhuvan will be a Google Earth killer atleast in India. But it looks like that can nit be the case anytime soon. Here is why..
- While Google Earth works on a downloadable client, Bhuvan works within the browser (only supports Windows and IE 6 and above).
- The ISRO Bhuvan currently has serious performance issues. The site currently very unstable. It gives up or hangs the browser every once in a while. When a layer (state, district, taluk, etc.) is turned on, it renders unevenly and sometimes fails to render at all. The navigation panel failed to load routinely and it felt like a rare sighting when we could actually use the panel.
- The promise of high resolution images has not been kept. While the service promises zoom up to 10 metres from the ground level as against 200 metres for Google Earth, we didn’t encounter a single image with nearly as much detailing. In fact, comparative results for a marquee location such as New Delhi’s Connaught Place or Red Fort make its clear as to the inferior performance of ISRO Earth as of now.
- The navigation tools are similar to Google Earth (GE).
- The search doesn’t work if a query returns multiple results. A pop up window is supposed to give the multiple results from which the user is supposed to be able to choose. During two days of sporadic testing, we found the result only once. The rest of the time, the window would pop up, but nothing would be displayed. When the search is accurate, the software ‘flies in’ to the exact location, the same way as GE.
- Users need to create an account and download a plug-in.
- Bhuvan packs a lot of data on weather, waterbodies and population details of various administrative units. We were unable to access weather data. Clicking on icons of administrative units show basic information such as the population. For specialist users, Bhuvan might hold some attraction. For instance, there is a drought map which cab be used to compare drought situation across years and there is a flood map that shows Bihar during the Kosi flood and after. With Isro backing, Bhuvan would be able to provide such relevant data from time to time, but the application needs major improvements in terms of usability before it will be of interest to the ordinary user.
- Users can also not edit any data or tag locations.
- We hope Bhuvan is able to fix the bugs soon. But even then, to be a credible alternative to existing mapping services, and even to get new users to try it, it much provide much higher resolution images. User interest will be piqued only when they can see their house or school or local street in high resolution. With Isro data, this is easily doable.
ISRO Bhuvan Vs Google Earth – A Comparision

ISRO’s Bhuvan (which means Earth) is a satellite mapping tool similar to Google Earth and Wikimapia. It was developed by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It offers resolution up to 10 metres and is considered as a rival to Google Earth and Wikimapia.
A prototype (beta) of this application was launched on 12th August 2009.
Tata Consultancy Services has a 3 crore deal with ISRO to make advanced moon map which is taken by Chandrayaan. An official said this software will be a freeware and it needs a license for usage to check if the users are Indian nationals. This will provide better resolution compared to existing mapping solutions. Bhuvan will feature a zoom level of up to 10 meters while the Google Earth features a zoom level of up to 200 meters. ISRO has also decided to make a tracking and mapping antenna(30×15)m the largest in India in Chennai for advanced 3D mapping and resources.
